Las Vegas was just a stopover on the pioneer trails to the west, although became a popular railroad town in the early 20th century. With the development of the rail roads, Las Vegas became less important, but the completion of the nearby Hoover Dam in 1935 brought a growth of residents and tourism. This combined with the legalisation of gambling in 1931 lead to the the start of casinos, which Las Vegas is famous for.
